Masters Student Sylas Akulin

Sylas Akulin is coadvised by Brian Wiegmann and Gareth Powell, with research focused on the systematics and ecology of short-palped crane flies (Diptera: Limoniidae) of the eastern United States. They graduated from Old Dominion University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Minor in Environmental Health. Sarah worked as a mosquito surveillance technician in Virginia from 2022-2023. Their research interests include integrated pest management, lower dipteran diversity and delineation of species boundaries, developing techniques in insect rearing, and the behavioral & evolutionary ecology of sexual selection.​ Sarah's hobbies include art, live music, arthropod husbandry, and reading.
